Choose your hosting company carefully to avoid problems down the road. If you are not sure how big your site will be get at least 100 meg of disk space as that should be enough for most sites with less than 1000 pages. If you need advanced features like frontpage or php or sql then ask if your new host has them. Also ask what name they will use to bill you as many use a 3rd party processory and have strange names making it hard to figure out who it is on your credit card statement. The best way to test a web hosting company is to ask for a 30 day trial, most will allow this, and it gives you an idea of how they will perform. Beware of really cheap hosts as they have bad support and go out of business all the time. There are hundreds of good quality hosts, so there is no need to pick one with poor service or servers. You may want to consider a free host, but they do limit the amount of resources you can use and may shut you down with little or no notice. The best host for reliablilty is apache, with microsoft a close second, there are others but not as good.
I would recommend using a virtual host for all but the largest of sites, this way you get better support than with a dedicated server that sometimes comes with little or no support.
The new p4 servers are very fast and inexpensive compared to 5 years ago and a single box can host hundreds of domains.
